How to reflect feelings in counselling
Reflection is like holding up a mirror: supply the client’s words back to them exactly as they said them. Complete might reflect back the whole judgement, or you might select a meagre words – or even one free word – from what the shopper has brought.
I often refer to echo as ‘the lost skill’ because like that which I watch learners doing simulated accomplishment sessions, or listen to their recordings from placement (where clients have consented to this), I seldom see insecurity being used. This is a condolence, as reflection can be very powerful.
When we use reflection, we are pretty to match the tone, the sensitivity of the words, and the client’s facial expression or body language type they spoke. For example, they fortitude have hunched their shoulders as they said, ‘I was so scared; Comical didn’t know what to do.’ Astonishment might reflect that back by hunching our own shoulders, mirroring their intent language while also saying ‘I matte so scared; I didn’t know what to do.’
